Session recap

Recap — Sep 23, 2026

3 PARTICIPANTS · RU PRACTICE GROUP
  • Technique Fatigue: When mirroring was repeated too many times in a row, the person being questioned noticed the pattern and began to feel that information was being extracted rather than exchanged naturally.
  • Reciprocity Matters: A participant pointed out that one-sided questioning — with no openness from the other side — created a subtle wall, and that briefly sharing something genuine in return defused that tension.
  • Topic Fit: The moderator reflected that spending five minutes probing a subject the other person simply doesn't care about yields surface-level answers, and that naming this early ('it seems this topic doesn't really move you') would open the door to finding one that does.
  • Relaxed Rounds Work Better: A round that included light humor and a returned question flowed more easily, showing that inner state — not just technique — shapes how natural the conversation feels.
"It looks easy to listen to, but applying it — that's not so easy." — a participant reflecting after his first session as a listener
Why practice, not theory

Knowing the idea isn't the same as doing it under pressure.

You can read about active listening in an afternoon. That doesn't help when your kid stops talking to you, or a client is already annoyed. The response has to be automatic — that only comes from reps, with someone watching and correcting you in real time.

A partner shuts down

mid-argument, before it turns into a fight

A direct report pushes back

on feedback they think is unfair

A client wants a discount

and you need the real reason, not the stated one

A teenager stops answering

and every question makes it worse

Format

How a round works

01
Open

Two questions to start — plain, low-stakes, gets both people talking.

02
Practice

5 minutes: mirroring, labeling, paraphrasing. A moderator watches and times it.

03
Feedback

The listener hears first, then the group — specific, not generic.
