Recap — Aug 29, 2026

3 PARTICIPANTS · WEEKLY PRACTICE GROUP · 45 MIN
  • Skill in focus: naming the emotion behind what someone said, instead of just reflecting their words back.
  • Technique that worked: to find what someone's guarded about, flip their strength — if someone leads with reliability, they may have once felt overlooked for it.
  • Group insight: as listening skills improve, people naturally raise their standard for how they expect to be heard elsewhere — which can surface friction in relationships that haven't caught up yet.
  • Growth path discussed: participants who log enough practice rounds can move into a moderator track — running their own sessions on their own schedule.
"The pause did more work than the question did." — a participant, moderating her first round
Why practice, not theory

Knowing the idea isn't the same as doing it under pressure.

You can read about active listening in an afternoon. That doesn't help when your kid stops talking to you, or a client is already annoyed. The response has to be automatic — that only comes from reps, with someone watching and correcting you in real time.

Make them feel understood then negotiate — or don't
A partner shuts down

mid-argument, before it turns into a fight

A direct report pushes back

on feedback they think is unfair

A client wants a discount

and you need the real reason, not the stated one

A teenager stops answering

and every question makes it worse

Format

How a round works

01
Open

Two questions to start — plain, low-stakes, gets both people talking.

02
Practice

5 minutes: mirroring, labeling, paraphrasing. A moderator watches and times it.

03
Feedback

The listener hears first, then the group — specific, not generic.
